Fall Colors Approach Peak Radiance

Fall colors are superb right now in northern Utah, and at higher elevations through central and southern Utah. The light and color show will peak in northern Utah during the next few days.

Conditions will be perfect this weekend for a drive or hike to enjoy fall’s splendor. The weather will be delightfully warm and dry; roads and trails are in excellent shape. A storm is expected to hit northern Utah early next week. It is expected to drop snow above the 8,000 foot level, and produce rain at lower elevations. That precipitation will knock leaves from trees at high elevations.

See this page for detailed info about scenic drives to see fall colors.

Utah’s Undiscovered West Desert

Utah is famous for mountains and red rock canyons – skiing and national parks. Few realize our state includes a vast area we call the West Desert – remote, rugged and virtually uninhabited. Hundreds of square miles of land with only a handful of residents. Opportunity for outdoor recreation, solitude, and a lifestyle reminiscent of frontier days.

This article explores the West Desert.

Heber Valley, St George see rapid growth

The St George/Washington County area in southwestern Utah and Heber Valley in northern Utah are ranked No. 2 in the nation for growth for communities of their sizes.

Both are located in the heart of major recreational areas. Heber is a beautiful mountain valley adjacent to ski resorts, golf courses and prime fishing waters. St George is Utah’s winter playground, located close to two popular national parks, with a mild climate, exceptional golfing and stunning red rock scenery.

Lake Powell’s delightful right now

The boss took our entire utah.com office to Lake Powell last week. We stayed on a houseboat and had a great time. The weather was perfect – warm (but not hot) days, cool nights, water warm enough for skiing and other water sports.

There was even a beautiful almost-full moon. Slower fishing was the only down side – the full moon allowed stripers and bass to feed all night and so they weren’t hungry when we went after them.

The weather should be warm enough for water play for a couple more weeks. As the lake cools fishing will improve and boating conditions will continue to be good. Fall is a great time to boat, explore, hike and sight see at the big lake.

There's still plent of time for a great adventure there.

Alta gets first snowfall of season

“It is currently snowing in Town of Alta!! That is right, the Greatest Snow on Earth has begun to fly in Alta in the month of September. Looking out the window towards the High Rustler run, the snow is coming down sideways: sticking to the trees and covering the rocks. Accumulations appear to be about one inch, possibly more up high. As the clouds open and allow glimpses up to the top of Mt. Baldy and Point Supreme the snowfall is more defined and widespread at the higher elevations. It is never too early to get the skis waxed up for another year of powder in Alta. After 697” of snow last year, this upcoming season has already gotten off on the right note.”

-- Nick Como sent the above to Ski Utah on Sept 12.

Fall Colors Start in Northern Utah

Vivid reds and yellows are starting to appear on trees at higher elevations in northern Utah. I first noticed them yesterday as I drove Hwy 40 between Park City and Heber City. We’re right on the front end of an extravaganza of color.

Utah’s canyons and mountains will be ablaze with color during the next few weeks. Logan Canyon, the Alpine Loop, Red Canyon – these spots are always scenic, and they become incredibly beautiful during the fall.

Colors will probably peak in northern Utah during late September. Southern Utah mountain locations will follow a couple weeks later. Trees and shrubs in our lower desert canyons will display colors into November.

This page has details about some of our best drives to see the colors.
