Floods Ease Around St George

A major storm dumped snow and then rain on the mountains around St George, creating serious flooding. Conditions are easing today but travel will continue to be difficult in some isolated areas. Streams are running high and backcountry travel is discouraged until flows return to normal.

The town of Gunlock has been isolated by the flood, which took out access bridges. Other roads and bridges along the Santa Clara River have been damaged or destroyed. Two people died as a result of this flooding, and many homes were destroyed. These are highly unusual conditions for southern Utah and recreationists need to use extreme caution.

Backcountry conditions will improve within a few days. It will take longer before some roads are repaired.

Avalanche danger is significant on steep slopes throughout the region. Check here for avalanche information.
