Flooding Closes Roads Near St George

1-10-05 Major flooding in the St George area has closed roads and forced people from homes. One person is presumed dead after his vehicle became stuck in a torrent below Red Cliffs Recreation Area, about 13 miles east of St George. He apparently climbed onto his SUV and was swept away by floodwater.

Santa Clara has had significant flooding and people have been evacuated from low-lying areas.

Rain is expected to continue tonight and Tuesday, with conditions improving Wednesday. Floods in this area usually do not last long. Major roads should be passable but backcountry roads may sustain damage that takes time to repair. Until the storm clears and conditions are deemed safe, stay out of washes and streambeds around St George, Snow Canyon, Red Cliffs, and even over into Zion National Park.
